Time to write something and hopefully I’ll be able to write more often now. Anyway..I had a 3 weeks Vacation and I decided to visit in Alicante, Spain. My plan was to go there and practice some street photography since in Finland people are not used to street photographers and I did not want to cause any hassle on the streets. I figured that in Spain people might be more easygoing and more used to photographers taking random candid shots every now and then. I think I figured it right.
I planned to stay one day in Helsinki before flying to Alicante and day after flying back and decided to travel by train. I already packed day before so in the morning I just checked that I have everything with me and went outside. I packed my all-around Tamron 28-75, Sigma ultrawide, a Tamron telephoto and of course my D600. I also took some snacks to the train. I’ve always traveled with hand-luggage only so once again I had to think how much everything weights and therefore I could not take all the gear with me that I wanted to. Next time I’ll definitely take my tripod with me!
Eventually I found the right train and hopped in. I had a nice private cabin where i could just listen to music and watch the views going by. I also took little nap since I had to wake up so early and I did not want to miss time in Helsinki by sleeping in my hotel room. I can truly recommend selecting this little cabin if you can since it does not even cost any extra. Having that little privacy helps you to relax and you don’t have to worry about any weird sounds and noise since the soundproofing was very nice there.
After arriving to Helsinki and finding my hotel. I decided to visit Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki. I had been there couple times as a child and I wanted to see how much it has changed during the years. I walked to the harbor and figured it would be nice to go there by boat. You could also take a bus but on a nice weather going to the zoo on a boat is part of the experience. I’ve always enjoyed being close to water and it had been few years since last time I was on a boat. I really enjoyed seeing Helsinki from the sea and other boats going by while warm sea breeze hummed on my ears.
When I arrived to the zoo, I was little disappointed. Zoo was not that awesome as I remembered and it was not very photographer friendly. I’ve seen quite few zoos on my travels and unfortunately Korkeasaari is no way near the zoos like Kålmorden near Stockholm or the zoo in Madrid. Anyway it was a nice to walk round and spend the day outside. I also found out that at least one peacock had some “babies” and I managed to take a quick picture of one of them.
Next morning it was time to head to the airport. After security-checks I had like an hour to spend at the airport. People who know me might already guess how I spent the time…BY DRINKING COFFEE!! (yes, I might be little addicted to that stuff). I found a nice restaurant, ordered a cup of coffee and watched airport stuff doing their work. While I was having my coffee, they informed my flight was an hour late. I thought it is fine as long as I have some caffeinated drinks in front of me and the airport staff continued entertaining me.
Eventually I ended up sitting in the plane I was on my way to Alicante. After around 3 hours flight I was in Spain. Even it was summer in Finland, it was bit of a shock to step outside from the airport, it was around 32C outside! It was quite a lot for a finnish guy like me who is used to feeling like a troll in a cave during the long and dark winter. After I recovered from the warm shock-wave, I found a right bus that took me near my hotel. I stayed in 4 start hotel, Eurostar Lucentum which is located in the center of Alicante. Hotel was very nice and the staff were truly amazing!
After settling in, I decided to make a quick scouting mission around the hotel and I immediately got inspired by the surroundings. There was a lot of interesting buildings, shops, streets and people on the streets. I knew from that moment the trip was going to be awesome! Later that evening I took my camera with me and decided to take couple shots.
during my trip I kinda had my camera with me everywhere I went. I walked around the city camera in my hands from dusk till dawn and took a shot every now and then while I was exploring the city. I’ve no really done much street photography before so it was nice experience trying to capture the streets of Alicante. Below some shots I took:
While I was in Alicante, I heard that Santa Barbara castle is a must place to visit. Since I heard it from multiple sources, I decided to find out how to get there. I read that there was a tunnel that lead to the elevator that takes people to the top of the castle (castle is located in the top of a mountain). It was so hot outside so I did not want to walk to the castle and decided to take the elevator.
Castle was very well maintained and it was truly amazing to see the history of it. How ever the castle was not the thing to see… it was the amazing view! You could see the whole Alicante from the top of the castle. I realized I just had to stay there until the sunset since I love the city lights and obviously you could see them from the mountain.
I think im not that great on photographing landscapes but I think I took my best landscape / cityscape picture ever there. Humidity made a softbox in the air and gave a nice light to the scene. It made the picture look like a painting. I really love the pic below:
I really enjoyed the visit in Alicante. I have a lot to tell about the trip but my time is running out now and I have to end the “blog” here. I might do a “part 2” if I find some time. Hope you liked it!
